Both terms refer to the same concept: a named block of code that can be executed by invoking its name. Let's explore methods/functions in Java:

1. Method Declaration and Structure:

A method in Java has the following structure:

returnType methodName(parameters) {
    // Method body
    // Code to perform the task
    return returnValue; // (if returnType is not void)
}
  • returnType: The data type of the value that the method returns. Use void if the method doesn't return a value.

  • methodName: The unique name that identifies the method.

  • parameters: Optional input data passed to the method.

  • Method Body: Contains the code that performs the task of the method.

  • return: Optional keyword used to return a value from the method (if returnType is not void).

2. Calling a Method:

You can call (invoke) a method using its name along with any required arguments (parameters).

returnType result = methodName(arguments);

3. Method Overloading:

Method overloading allows you to define multiple methods with the same name but different parameter lists. This provides flexibility in how you call the method.

int add(int a, int b) {
    return a + b;
}

double add(double a, double b) {
    return a + b;
}

4. Parameters and Arguments:

  • Parameters: Defined in the method declaration, parameters are placeholders for values that will be passed when the method is called.

  • Arguments: Actual values passed to a method when it's invoked.

void greet(String name) {
    System.out.println("Hello, " + name);
}

// Calling the method with an argument
greet("Alice"); // Output: Hello, Alice

5. Return Values:

  • If a method has a return type other than void, it must use the return statement to provide a value of that type.

  • The method stops executing as soon as a return statement is encountered.

Here's an example that demonstrates creating and calling a method:

    int add(int a, int b) {
        return a + b;
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        MethodExample example = new MethodExample(); // Creating an instance of the class

Methods/functions help you modularize code, make it reusable, and keep your program organized. By defining methods to perform specific tasks, you can create more maintainable and efficient code.
